GHANA NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS LASHES AKUFFO ADDO FOR NOT ATTENDING ANY OF THE TEACHER AWARDS CEREMONY SINCE 2017

The National President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT)-Phillipa Larsen has expressed her displeasure at President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo refusing to attend any of the annual best teacher awards ceremonies since he took office in 2017.

The president of GNAT - Phillipa Larsen said teachers are sad by this development and the earlier the president changes his posture the better.

She was speaking to Media General‘s Paa Kwesi Larry Moses on the sidelines of the Ghana Teacher Prize Ceremony held on Tuesday, October 5 at Sunyani, the Bono Region capital.

“Teachers are so sad because we love the president and we know our president also loves us,” Ms Larsen indicated.

“But it must be shown not just by words. Your words can be given to anybody to present but seeing you is different thing altogether.”

The GNAT National President said the presence of the president at any event speaks volumes about the backing the country’s leadership gives to that programme and his absence also speaks volumes.

“It is our prayer that next year God willing he is able to join us. I want to state that whatever programme that is scheduled for October 5 must be cancelled. This is not a national event, it is a global event and if our president is not with us, it means a different thing altogether.”

Mr Ebenezer Kojo Otoo, a 44-year-old teacher of the Winneba Senior High School (SHS) in the Efutu Municipality of the Central Region, was on Tuesday crowned the 2021 National Best Teacher.

For his prize, Mr Otoo received a GHC250,000.00 cheque for a three-bedroom house sponsored by GLICO Pension.

At the Ghana Teachers Prize 2021 Awards held in Sunyani, Reverend Sister Jacinta Kwakyewaa, a tutor at the St. Francis SH/Technical School in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region was adjudged the first runner-up and she received a brand new 4×4 pick-up vehicle from the Prudential Bank.

The National Teaching Council, organisers of the awards, presented a brand new saloon car to Mr Nelson Saviour Kwashie of the Awutu Swinton SHS in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region for the second runner-up position.

Cash prizes ranging between GHC5,000.00 and GHC7,000.00 as well as other valuable items were presented to other 17 deserving teaching and non-teaching staff, who distinguished themselves in other categories of the award, including Junior High, Primary and Kindergarten levels.
