It is on record that the Ghana education service has banned the use of corporal punishment in the senior high schools and other institutions in the country
The Ghana Education Service (GES) initiated the Safe Schools Programme as part of efforts aimed at making pre-tertiary schools in the country safe and secured for teaching and learning.
Management of the GES banned the use of corporal punishment in pre-tertiary schools in February, 2017 and re-emphasised it in 2019, with a directive for all teachers to adopt the Positive Discipline toolkit as the only measure for correcting misbehaviour of learners in schools.
It is however, regrettable to note in recent times, there has been increase reported cases of indiscipline on the part of students due to the ban corporal punishment by the Ghana Education Service. Some learners misconduct themselves a whole lot of times just to get on the nerves of Teachers. Indiscipline in the senior high School in on the raise and nobody knows when it is going to end. Most teachers are finding it very difficult to handle the situation.
Even though the Ghana Education Service has ban canning of students there are incidences that some students were canned by teachers and some parents and community members go and attack teachers because they believe that teachers don't have any right to discipline their are children.
In this video you can see that a student and a teacher are seriously battling it out in classroom. The other students were cheering up the student as he throw punches to his teacher. One students managed to film the incidence, even though Senior High Students are prohibited from using mobile phones in the classroom.
