ONLY 34,424 AND NOT 44,000 TEACHERS HAVE LEFT THE EDUCATION SECTOR - KWESI KWARTENG P.R.O MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
PRESS RELEASE
RE: 44,000 TEACHERS WALKED OUT OF THE CLASSROOM AT BASIC SCHOOLS IN 2021
The Ministry of Education has noted with concern statements made by Deputy Ranking Member of the Education Committee of Parliament, Dr. Clement Apaak making the rounds online that suggests that based on 2020/ 2021(Education Management Information System (EMIS) data, some 44,000 teachers left the classrooms. This according to him represents over 15% attrition rate.
For purposes of clarity, the Ministry wishes to state the facts as follows:
1. Based on the Verified EMIS data for 2020/2021, the actual figures that account for the difference in the total number of teachers between 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 is 34,424 and not 44,000 as wrongly speculated.
2. Over the past years including that of 2019/2020, EMIS had included NABCO personnel, National Service Personnel and Teacher Trainees on Teaching practice.
3. The 2020/2021 EMIS data on teachers excluded the above personnel from the year's
Annual School Census.
4. This was done to provide the Ghana Education Service true data on Pupil Teacher Ratio (PTR) and Pupil Trained Teacher Ratio (PTTR) at the basic school level. In effect, all personnel not on GES Government Payroll were excluded from Teachers Profile of the 2020/2021 EMIS Data.
The general Public is hereby entreated to disregard such assumptive speculations and deliberate misrepresentations
